The Muses

"Goddesses of the arts"

"and that's the world's first dish"

The Muses have a large presence within “Hercules” mainly through song. They sing The Gospel Truth I, II, and III, Zero to Hero, and are involved in I Won’t Say I’m in Love. The Muses stay consistent throughout all their songs. They are wise, honest, and knowledgeable to every character. Their lyrics speak the truth, and in every song, they are to be the voice of reason. The Gospel Truth I, II, and III demonstrate that the Muses are aware of everything happening around the characters and audience. The Muses sing the first song of the film, The Gospel Truth I, catching our attention and forming a trust within the audience by directly talking to us. This trust grows stronger with every lyric they sing. The villain of the story, Hades, is introduced by the Muses in The Gospel Truth II. The Muses are warning us for what is to come. The Gospel Truth II contrasts The Gospel Truth I, showing they are serious when appropriate. The Gospel Truth III portrays the same serious feeling. The Muses explain how Hercules is living as a mortal with mortal parents, and his god family is looking over him. This scene is sad, but the emotions are amped up when they are sang by the Muses, because they have already established themselves as important and therapeutic characters.

Zero to Hero is sang by the Muses, but only about Hercules. The lyrics further the personality of the Muses. They are up-beat and having fun telling the audience of Hercules’ fame. The Muses have a certain charm that can hypnotize an audience. Zero to Hero is another way of showing how the Muses are significant characters in engaging the audience.

They sing a significant part in Meg’s song I Won’t Say I’m in Love. They are her conscious. While Meg is fighting the urge of love, they are telling her what she already knows. The Muses are wise and already know exactly what Meg is feeling. As an audience member, I am thinking all the same things the Muses are saying; they know the audience better than anyone else and are able to relay the message for us. All the lyrics the Muses sing form a powerful bond between the audience and the story, and it is impossible not to love their characters.

"oh, honey, though it may seem impossible that's the gospel truth"
